Alientech KESS3 Unlock Module: Take On Locked Bosch MD1 & MG1 ECUs Right in Your Own Shop
The race to unlock modern ECUs just took another step.
Days after the tuning world began buzzing about the newest generation of unlocking hardware, Alientech fired back with a big release of its own: the new Alientech KESS3 Unlock Module.
If you already tune with KESS3, this may be one of the most significant accessories Alientech has put out in a long while.
The reason is simple. With the right setup, KESS3 owners can now unlock a growing list of protected Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs themselves, in their own shop.
That means no shipping the ECU off to an outside unlocking service, no waiting days for it to come back, and no handing over control of the job.
Unlock. Access. Read. Write. Back up.
Better still, once a supported ECU has gone through the first BOOT unlock, Alientech's new protocols let you program it afterward straight through the ECU connector in BENCH mode, with no need to open it up again.
For a pro tuning business, that's a major shift.

What Is the Unlock Module?
It's a dedicated piece of hardware Alientech built specifically to unlock supported, protected Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs.
Paired with the Alientech KESS3 tuning tool, it gives the tech the hardware needed to run Alientech's supported BOOT Unlock procedure.
One key point: the Unlock Module doesn't replace KESS3, and it isn't a tuning tool by itself. KESS3 is still the ECU programming platform; the module adds the specialist hardware for that first entry into these protected ECUs.
On the supported protocols, you'll need KESS3 with CAR BENCH/BOOT activation and an active subscription.
Hook it up correctly and KESS3 handles the unlock, then opens up the ECU memories for reading, writing and full backups.
Why It's Such a Big Deal
Late-model Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs have become one of the toughest problems the tuning industry has faced in years.
Automakers keep tightening ECU security, and on many newer vehicles you can no longer just plug into the OBD port and read the ECU.
For a lot of shops, that left three choices:
- Turn the customer away.
- Ship the ECU elsewhere to be unlocked.
- Invest in ever more specialized equipment and know-how to do it in-house.
The Unlock Module brings more of that work back into the professional tuning shop, and that matters.
Every ECU you send out costs you time. Every day the vehicle sits costs your customer time. Every job handed off gives away some of your margin and some of your control.
Running the unlock and programming yourself changes all of that.
How Does It Work?
The first step happens in BOOT mode.
You access the ECU with the dedicated Unlock Module and the right connections. KESS3 then runs the supported unlock procedure and applies the required patch.
After a successful unlock, KESS3 can reach the ECU memories and carry out supported read, write and full backup operations.
Alientech went further, too. Along with the module, it released new BENCH protocols for the same family of protected MD1 and MG1 ECUs.
So after that first unlock, supported ECUs can be connected straight through the ECU connector and programmed in BENCH mode. You don't repeat the full opening and BOOT routine every time the vehicle returns.
Unlock once in BOOT, then handle future supported programming in BENCH. For a working tuning shop, that makes the whole process far more practical.
Supported Bosch ECUs
At launch, Alientech lists these protected Bosch ECUs:
- Bosch MD1CS003
- Bosch MD1CS069
- Bosch MD1CP007
- Bosch MD1CS012
- Bosch MG1CS042
- Bosch MD1CS004 HW80
- Bosch MG1CS031
- Bosch MD1CP006
- Bosch MD1CS005
- Bosch MG1CS002
Coverage centers mainly on 2021-and-newer vehicles and includes both gasoline and diesel applications.
These aren't obscure ECUs, either. They show up in some of the most important modern tuning applications out there.
Which Vehicles Are Covered?
The first release spans applications from Audi, Bentley, Citroën, Cupra, DS, Fiat, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Land Rover, Opel, Peugeot, Porsche, Seat, Skoda, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen and more. Model ranges include:
- Audi A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and many Q, S and RS models.
- Bentley Bentayga and Flying Spur.
- Cupra Formentor and Leon.
- Ford Focus, Kuga, Puma and F-Series Super Duty applications.
- Genesis G70, G80, GV70 and GV80.
- Kia Stinger, Sorento and Tasman.
- Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar.
- Porsche Cayenne, Macan and Panamera applications.
- Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Polo, Tiguan, Touareg and T-Roc.
That's just part of the initial list. If your shop handles modern European performance cars, SUVs, commercial vehicles or late-model diesels, there's highly relevant coverage here.
The Real Win: Keeping the Whole Job In-House
This, to us, is where the value really is.
The tool market isn't just a contest over who has the longest vehicle list. It's about which jobs you can finish profitably in your own shop.
And your customer doesn't care why their ECU is hard to get into. They just want their vehicle back.
The more of the process you handle yourself, the more you control turnaround, quality, scheduling and, in the end, profit. That's why hardware like the Unlock Module matters.
BOOT First, BENCH After
This is the feature professional KESS3 users should watch most closely.
The module carries out the first supported unlock in BOOT. After that, Alientech's matching BENCH protocols let you read and write supported ECUs straight through the connector.
So when the same customer comes back for a revised calibration, a hardware upgrade, more development or simply to have the original file put back, the job can be much easier.
What might have been a one-off specialist procedure becomes something you can handle in a normal shop setting.
What's in the Kit?
The full kit includes the dedicated Alientech hardware for the supported unlocking procedure:
- Alientech hardware module 14AS00T11S
- 26-way ribbon cable
- 14AS00T12S adapter board
- Connection jumpers
- ECU/VFL3 connection cables
- Ferrites
- Workshop connection accessories
It's a purpose-built Alientech product designed for the KESS3 ecosystem, not a third-party workaround.

Alientech KESS3 Unlock Module: a dedicated BOOT accessory for unlocking supported, protected Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs in the shop. Used with KESS3, it handles the BOOT Unlock procedure on selected locked ECUs in 2021-and-newer vehicles. Once unlocked, KESS3 can reach the ECU for BOOT-mode reading, writing and full backups. It's a complete kit for Boot-mode connection to Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs, letting you interface with the control unit so the unlock and programming operations supported by the KESS3 tool can be carried out.

Alientech KESS3: the KESS3 hardware itself.

Is This Alientech Answering the Competition?
It certainly shows how fast this corner of tuning tech is moving.
Getting into modern locked Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs has become one of the hottest areas of development in pro tuning tools. Each manufacturer is tackling the technical problem its own way, but the aim is much the same: give professional tuners more control over protected ECUs and keep more of the job inside their own shop.
That competition is great news for tuners: more development, more coverage, better workflows and, ultimately, more vehicles you can tune.
Tool makers are moving fast, and right now Alientech is making it plain that KESS3 plans to stay at the front of the pack.
Who Should Buy One?
If you use KESS3 professionally and see a lot of modern vehicles, this accessory deserves serious attention, particularly if you do a lot of work on:
- VAG vehicles
- Land Rover and Range Rover
- Porsche
- Ford
- Stellantis applications
- Hyundai, Kia and Genesis
- Modern diesels
- Commercial vehicles
- Performance SUVs
Even a modest number of extra jobs done in-house can quickly pay for the added capability. And as always, the supported list will keep changing as new protocols arrive.

KESS3 Unlock Module FAQ
Is the Unlock Module a tuning tool? No. It's a dedicated unlocking accessory built to work with KESS3, which remains the ECU programming tool.
Do I need KESS3 to use it? Yes. The module was developed specifically as part of the KESS3 ecosystem.
Which KESS3 activation is required? Alientech specifies KESS3 CAR BENCH/BOOT activation plus an active subscription for the supported protocols.
Does it unlock Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs? Yes. The initial release covers a specific range of protected Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs, including MD1CS003, MD1CS069, MD1CP007, MD1CS012, MG1CS042 and several more. Always check Alientech's current vehicle and protocol list before you start a job.
Can I unlock the ECU myself? On supported applications, yes. That's the entire point: completing the supported BOOT Unlock in your own shop with KESS3.
Can I read and write the ECU afterward? Yes, depending on the protocol. After the unlock, supported operations include memory access, reading, writing and a complete ECU backup.
Do I have to open the ECU every time? No, and that's one of the most interesting parts of this release. The first supported unlock happens in BOOT with the module. After that, Alientech's matching BENCH protocols let you reach supported ECUs straight from the ECU connector without opening them again.
Is it only for cars? No. It covers gasoline and diesel passenger cars and SUVs, with applications reaching into commercial and other vehicle sectors too.
Can Viezu check whether my KESS3 is compatible? Yes. If you're not sure which activations you have, which subscription you need or whether a certain ECU is supported, contact us before you order.
The Next Generation of ECU Unlocking Has Arrived
ECU tuning is changing fast. Modern ECU security keeps getting more sophisticated, and so do the tools pros have to deal with it.
The KESS3 Unlock Module puts another key piece of that technology right in your shop. Unlock protected Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs, access their memories, read, write and make a full backup, then switch to a far easier BENCH workflow for later programming on supported protocols.
For current KESS3 users, it's a fairly simple add-on that could greatly widen the range of modern vehicles you can handle in-house. Most important of all, fewer ECUs leave your shop and more of each job stays with you.
