Before You Remap: The Pre-Tune Checklist Every Viezu Dealer Should Follow

Before You Remap: The Pre-Tune Checklist Every Viezu Dealer Should Follow – Viezu USA

This article was adapted for drivers and tuning professionals in the United States by Viezu USA. Measurements are shown in US units alongside the originals.

Getting a car ready for a remap matters just as much as the tune. As a professional tuner, your attention to detail should show in every job, giving customers the best results and protecting their vehicles.

Below are some of the key checks to carry out before you remap any vehicle. Working through them helps confirm the car is ready to tune, and it strengthens your reputation for thorough, quality work.

Vehicle Check – Viezu USA

1. Do a Visual Inspection for Physical Damage

Before you start, give the vehicle a thorough visual inspection, looking for cracks, leaks or worn parts. Focus especially on:

  • Hoses and belts: make sure they're intact and crack-free.
  • Exterior damage: watch for visible impact or wear that could point to hidden mechanical problems.
  • Engine bay: check for oil or coolant leaks and anything else out of the ordinary.

Record what you find on the Viezu Vehicle Inspection Sheet, which keeps your checks consistent and gives you a record to refer back to. Ask our team for a copy.

2. Check the Fluid Levels

Correct fluid levels are vital to engine health and performance. Before remapping, make sure every fluid is at its recommended level:

  • Oil: check the engine oil level (between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick) and its condition. Dirty or low oil can damage the engine during tuning.
  • Coolant: check the coolant level (between minimum and maximum) to avoid overheating. Deal with any leaks or discoloration before going further.

3. Run a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Scan

A full DTC scan is essential for spotting existing fault codes. Scan the vehicle's ECU with your diagnostic tool, and fix any fault codes before you remap, because unresolved problems can disrupt the tuning process or hurt the vehicle's performance.

Common Faults to Look Out For:

  • Misfire codes
  • Sensor errors (MAF, MAP and O2 sensors, for example)
  • Turbo-related codes

Some tools, such as KESS3, can also read DTCs, but you may want to invest in a dedicated professional code reader. There are code readers for every budget; at Viezu we use an Autel diagnostic tool.

4. Check Tire Condition

Tires aren't directly part of tuning, but checking them is part of doing a thorough job. Worn or wrongly inflated tires can compromise the test drive and the car's overall safety.

What to Check:

  • Tread depth: make sure it meets legal requirements.
  • Tire pressure: set it to the manufacturer's figures (usually found on the B-pillar of most modern cars).
  • Visible damage: look for bulges, cuts or uneven wear. Uneven wear can point to wheel balance or alignment problems that may affect the car's performance or safety.

5. Go Through the Service History

Get the vehicle's service history from the customer and review it before remapping. Online vehicle history reports and any state inspection records available can also be worth checking. These checks help uncover unresolved maintenance issues that could affect the tune. Confirm in particular:

  • When the vehicle was last serviced.
  • Whether parts such as the timing belt, turbo or injectors have been replaced.
  • Any history of major repairs.

6. Find Out About Modifications

Establish whether the vehicle already has modifications, since they can change how the engine reacts to a remap. Some are easy to spot, such as aftermarket exhausts or upgraded intakes; others are hard to see or hidden from view. You need to know whether the car has been modified, and the easiest way is to ask the customer. Modifications may include:

  • Aftermarket exhaust systems
  • Air intakes or intercoolers
  • Turbo upgrades
  • Pulley upgrades

Talk the modifications through with the customer so they have realistic expectations of the remap.

7. Collect Basic Vehicle History

Has the Car Been Tuned Before?

Ask the customer whether the car has been tuned before, or look for signs of an earlier remap. Previously tuned cars may need extra steps, such as returning to stock before the new map goes on.

If the customer's car has been tuned or modified and you use a file writing service like Viezu, tell your file writer exactly what modifications have been made when you request file changes.

8. Take a Test Drive

A pre-remap test drive lets you judge how the car performs now and catch problems a visual inspection might miss. Pay attention to:

  • Engine responsiveness
  • Throttle behavior
  • Turbo operation (if fitted)
  • Unusual noises or vibrations

There's plenty to watch for, but look especially for unexpected engine behavior: long turbo lag, very slow or very aggressive throttle response, exhaust smoke, or vibration and knocking from the engine. Note anything that may need fixing before the remap and discuss what you find with the customer. Your findings must also be included in the vehicle details whenever you request a file from your file supplier.
