The weight problem
Because of all the weight they're carrying, motorhome engines tend to feel a little sluggish. A modern, well-equipped caravan can easily weigh more than 2,000 kg (about 4,400 lb) before you add the tow car, its passengers and their never-ending bags, and a motorhome weighs more again.
Many motorhomes are built to a 3,500 kg (about 7,700 lb) weight limit, and some are converted vehicles fitted with engines that make no more power than you'd find in a much smaller, lighter vehicle.
Towing needs a lot more power and torque, and an engine remap can deliver it with astonishing results.
More weight means a heavier right foot and more fuel burned. Even a fairly powerful engine works much harder here than it would in a lighter vehicle.
Keeping pace with traffic on faster roads can feel like hard work, especially at altitude and on climbs, which takes the fun out of driving.

Newer versions of this long-time favorite benefit too. A 2023 Ford Transit 2.0 TDCi produces 131 hp and 387 Nm (about 285 lb-ft) from the factory, and once tuned delivers a huge 168 hp and 420 Nm (about 310 lb-ft).
