Stage 1 Gasoline File Writing in StageX, Using the MED17
The Viezu Technical Academy webinar How to Write a Stage 1 Gasoline Tuning File with StageX – MED17 is in the books, and the complete recording is now on YouTube.
It's a hands-on session in which the Viezu team shows how to tackle a Stage 1 gasoline calibration in StageX, using the Bosch MED17 ECU as the working example.
We dig into the main calibration areas behind a well-structured Stage 1 tune: torque, load, boost, ignition, fueling, lambda, knock control and engine protection.

Watch: How to Write a Stage 1 Gasoline Tuning File with StageX – MED17
What's Covered
The session is a practical introduction to building a Stage 1 gasoline calibration with StageX. Topics include:
- Approaching a stock gasoline ECU file before you change anything
- Finding your way around a Bosch MED17 file in StageX
- Pinpointing the main calibration areas a Stage 1 tune needs
- Driver request and torque control
- Torque limiters and how they tie into the rest of the calibration
- Load and boost control
- Ignition timing
- Fueling and lambda strategy
- Knock control
- Engine and component protection strategies
- How the core gasoline calibration areas work together
- Putting together a more structured Stage 1 workflow
Why Stage 1 Gas Tuning Deserves Care
A Stage 1 tune may target an otherwise stock vehicle with no big hardware changes, but the calibration behind it shouldn't be simplistic.
The ECU is always juggling requests and limits across many parts of its engine management strategy.
Change requested torque and you can affect load. Load can change how much boost is needed. Boost, timing, fueling and lambda all have to be weighed against knock control, temperatures and the ECU's own protection logic.
Once you understand those links, you can stop bumping maps by a flat percentage and start making better-informed calibration calls.
In the session, we explain the reasoning behind the process and show how StageX helps you find, review and modify the right calibration areas.
A Closer Look at the Content
Rather than treating every map as a standalone tweak, the webinar looks at Stage 1 development as one connected process.
Torque Request and Torque Control
How the ECU reads driver demand and handles requested torque, and why torque limiters and related strategies belong in the overall tune.
Load and Boost
On turbo engines, more power means understanding how requested load, boost pressure and the ECU's torque model relate to one another. We cover which areas to review and why boost shouldn't be treated as an isolated target.
Ignition Timing
Timing is central to how a gasoline engine performs. We look at why the base ignition strategy matters, how timing tracks engine load and why knock control has to be part of the calibration.
Fueling and Lambda
A Stage 1 tune needs a suitable fueling strategy too. We cover lambda targets, enrichment and how fueling needs connect to load, boost, temperature and engine protection.
Knock Control and Protection
Modern ECUs have extensive monitoring and protection built in. Knowing how they work is vital when raising output, especially across varying fuel quality, operating temperatures and real-world conditions.
The Big Lesson
A common trap for anyone new to gasoline file writing is handling each map on its own.
Raising torque, boost or timing can ripple out to other parts of the ECU strategy.
The professional way is to understand what the ECU is aiming for, identify the maps and limiters in play, and then make changes that complement each other.
StageX can help you find and organize key calibration maps, but knowing why a map is there and how it interacts with the rest of the ECU strategy is still a core part of pro file writing.
This session is designed to close that gap.
Main Takeaways
By the end, viewers should better understand:
- How to approach a stock MED17 calibration
- What to review before tuning starts
- How torque-based gasoline ECU strategies operate
- How driver request, torque, load and boost connect
- Why ignition timing and knock control go hand in hand
- Where lambda and fueling fit into the overall strategy
- Why protection strategies stay part of the calibration process
- How to use StageX to locate and work through the relevant maps
- How the main calibration areas interact
- How to build a more organized, repeatable Stage 1 workflow
