AutoTuner has released an important update aimed at Bosch MD1CS004 ECUs, which sit in a wide range of 2.0L TDI engines across the VAG group. The new functionality makes OBD tuning on these units faster, more reliable and available on more vehicles.
For pro tuners, the question is never just whether a tool can do the job. It's how fast, how consistently and on how many vehicles, without needless disruption, and this release improves all three.
What the MD1CS004 Update Adds
The update supports additional Cboot versions on MD1CS004 ECUs, so you can now connect and run OBD VR (Virtual Read) on more variants of the ECU across a broader range of vehicles.
In practice, that means fewer bench workarounds and quicker access to tuning files. When your shop schedule is tight, it saves time on diagnosis and execution alike, boosting throughput and keeping customers happy.

Quicker ECU identification and Gen2 filtering
A less visible but just as useful change is improved detection logic for identifying the ECU. With more Gen2 MD1CS004 units turning up in newer VAG vehicles, flagging these unsupported ECUs early in the job is a big help.
No tuning tool currently supports Gen2 versions. Trying to read or write one without realizing what it is wastes time and leads to unnecessary fault-code clearing, and faster, more accurate ECU ID avoids that problem completely.

H80 hardware: what to know
H80 hardware variants deserve a mention too. These MD1CS004 versions can't be tuned on the bench because of Bosch's limited service mode, but AutoTuner can now reach them over OBD using a VAG-specific method.
That's especially handy if your shop has had to turn certain vehicles away or fall back on slower bench strategies. If H80 units have caught you out before, this change alone may be worth a second look at those vehicles.
Vehicles Covered
The update improves OBD tuning support on:
- Audi: 30 TDI / 40 TDI (2.0 TDI CR EU6)
- Cupra: 2.0 TDI CR EU6
- Volkswagen: 2.0 TDI CR EU6 / EU6.2 / GTD
- SEAT / Skoda: 2.0 TDI CR EU6 / EU6.2
- Ford: 2.0 EcoBlue
Performance Specs
For technical reference, here are the current OBD benchmarks with the update:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Readout | Virtual Read via OBD |
| MCU | TC298 |
| Write time (including unlock) | about 6 minutes |
| Write time (after unlock) | about 2 minutes |
| Checksum correction | Enabled |
| Back to Stock function | Available |

FAQs
Do I need new hardware?
No. The update is part of AutoTuner's ongoing firmware and software development; if you own the tool, the new features arrive through the usual update process.
Can I tune every MD1CS004 ECU now?
No. Gen2 MD1CS004 ECUs still can't be tuned by any tool on the market, but AutoTuner now spots them early so you don't waste time.
Is bench access still needed on some MD1CS004 ECUs?
In some cases, yes. OBD coverage has grown, but not every MD1CS004 is included. H80 variants specifically can't be done on the bench, but they can now be handled over OBD.
Will it work on every 2.0 TDI?
Only engines with supported MD1CS004 ECUs running supported Cboot versions. If you're unsure, run a quick ECU ID check with AutoTuner before you start.
